Seeker of Beauty

What exactly is beauty? Where do you find it? For myself, beauty is simply that which moves me. Sometimes I find beauty where many others find it for themselves and sometimes I find beauty where few others even deign to notice it. I hereby dedicate my life to seeking out and creating beauty so that the world might discover anew how to be moved by the fluttering of a butterfly's wing.

Almost there...

I'm on the edge of a new year and about to venture forth to San Francisco in order to welcome 2007 the Irish way... at a pub... drinking Guinness. I'm hoping the night will find me with a lighter heart than it began. I have my doubts of this, but I would love to be surprised. Hell I need to be surprised.

Good Vibrations

I went to my old church today. Pastor Larry talked about John 1:1-18. It's a passage that I've always liked very much and still do like even though I've outgrown the limitaions of the standard interpretation of Christianity and the Bible. The bit that I like goes something like this...

In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

I've had a few ideas about this passage that have been brewing around inside my head for some time. This being Christmas Eve I thought it would prove a fitting post to share these ideas. So here goes...

What does word mean? Well Webster's lists the following as the first definition...

1 a : something that is said (1) : TALK, DISCOURSE (putting one's feelings into words) (2) : the text of a vocal musical composition c : a brief remark or conversation (would like to have a word with you)

Well, if word is something that is said, how is that done? What are the mechanics of speaking words, what are they? Well, we are able to speak because of our vocal cords, which when we attempt to make sounds, vibrate according to what we are trying to say and these vibrations are further refined by our tongue and lips to create the sounds that we have come to know as words. So, let's skip a lot of hoopla and agree that vibrations are the source of the sounds that become words. It is very basic science that sound is created by vibrations that travel through the air in waves, which are then picked up by our ears, and our brains then translate these vibrational waves into recognizable speech. Just imagine the complexity that lies behind the creation and understanding of the visual and spoken word... It's amazing.

Now, let's take another leap down Alice's rabbit hole to Wonderland. Have you heard of a little thing called String Theory? Well, it's the current physics model that describes how the Universe exists. The brief explanation of String Theory goes something like this... The atom consists of Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons. Electrons are what they are they cannot be broken down any further. The Protons and Neutrons that make up the nucleus of the atom, however, are composed of things called up and down Quarks. So, now you have the three things that are the smallest known elements in the Universe: Electrons and, up and down Quarks. Now String Theory says that these three things, from which EVERYTHING in the Universe is made of, are actually tiny bundles of vibrating strings. The size of the string and the frequency that it is vibrating at determines what type of Quark or Electron it is, which in turn determines the type of Proton or Neutron, which in turn determines the type of atom, which in turn combines with other atoms to make up EVERYTHING in the Universe. Everything that makes you who you are is determined by the innumerable vibrating strings that compose you.

Now, go back and take a look at that passage from John again. The Word is literally the Voice of God. Genesis says that God spoke and whatever he spoke was brought into physical existence. The Universe is God's symphony, His masterpiece. Like any great work of art, the Universe is brought to life as an expression of the Artist's soul, which in the process of creation gains a life of it's own. Each molecule of paint that is placed by the Artist's brush upon the canvas has it's own individuality and yet it is a part of something greater that can not be seen unless it can find a way to see itself from the Artist's perspective.

The great thing is that down to the smallest particle we are a part of God and we therefore ARE God. EVERYTHING IS GOD. Just as every cell in our body is us, we are God.

Just one more hop down the rabbit hole... Have you ever noticed how certain music can elicit an emotional response, how listening to certain pieces of music will result in the expression of joy, sadness or some other emotion? Have you noticed how the music will cause these emotions to well up in the center of your chest? Music is vibration and these vibrations connect with the strings that compose our bodies. The strings begin to vibrate in tune with the music and the emotion that the artist was trying to convey is expressed and shared. This says to me that emotion also has at least some basis in vibration. Now, considering that the Universe is created by God through vibration then how would the expression of anger feel to God? My guess is that it wouldn't feel very good and I probably wouldn't be able to bear it being near me, let alone a part of me. I mean I feel pretty shitty when I'm angry and I don't like how anger makes me feel. Therefore, it is my contention that anything that causes or brings about the expression of Love or Joy, would make God feel as good as it makes us feel, and that the expression of these emotions when shared between 2 or more people would be God's equivalence to a cosmic orgasm.

So, when you do that which you love, whether it be writing, making music, acting, painting, or even trading stocks, and those feelings of Love and Joy well up inside you, they do honor to God because you are honoring your passion. Then when you share these Passions and Creations with other people, they act as a catalyst and increase the expression of these emotions within others, which is literally spreading the Word of God, because you are awakening God within us.

Well, there you have it, my little descent down the rabbit hole. I hope you enjoyed the ride as much as I did.

Namaste

Titanic

I have been addicted to love stories of late. In last week I have watched Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet, The Notebook and tonight I watched Titanic. I love these three films. In Romeo + Juliet, Baz Luhrmann creates the perfect meeting of two lovers in the scene where they are separated by the fish tank and when they catch each others eye it is love at first sight. The all too palpable passion between Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams in The Notebook cuts through me like a knife every time I see it. The love between them is there from the instant they meet and yet they deny it for a time. They allow the strictures of her parents to come between them, but as with all true love that can only hold it back for a time because it is all too powerful for the material world to deny and when they finally succumb to their passion it is overwhelming.

However, none of this compares to what Titanic wrings out of me… I wrote a few comments as certain moments in the film hit me and they are below. I am emotionally exhausted from watching this film again and it was just as powerful as the first time I saw it. I can write no more for now and I will allow the following to speak for itself…

I cried the moment Rose saw her drawing on the TV. Imagine seeing a physical remnant of the greatest love you have ever known 84 years later. I cry now in the memory of the memory of her memory.

Jack won his ticket aboard Titanic in an all or nothing final round of a poker game. He has bet everything he and his friend have. He says, “When you have nothing, you have nothing to lose.” He wins the tickets and passage to America. He wins his own death and a love greater than words can describe. The question is was his Love worth the sacrifice of his life. I say yes, a hundred thousand times infinity, yes. Yes, yes, yes. To have known that kind of love is worth any sacrifice, including one’s own life.

Jack is dancing with a little girl below decks named Cora. The music changes and he tells her that he is going to dance with Rose now. Cora stands off to the side with a forlorn look upon her face. You know that Jack has been waiting all night to dance with Rose, but upon seeing the look of sadness upon Cora’s face, he takes the time to look her directly in the eyes and tell says to her, “You’re still my best girl Cora.” With these few heartfelt words he puts a smile upon her that brightens her entire face. That moment describes the kind of man that I am.

Rose is at tea with her Mother and rich friends. She is half listening to her Mother prattle on about her ineptitude when she notices a little girl and her mother. The mother is physically nudging the girl up into a proper sitting posture and then the girl takes her napkin and places it on her lap and then holds it with her hand in an all too ungodly proper position. In this moment, with that visual in her eyes and her Mother’s degrading prattle in her ear, she sees the bars of her cage and in that moment she realizes that she will not be caged. She goes to find jack at the bow of the ship. He asks her to close her eyes and he helps her up onto the bow’s railing, then he spreads her arms wide, like the wings of a phoenix, and as he holds her tightly he tells her to open her eyes. She sees nothing but ocean moving past her at incredible speeds and the joy of freedom enters her eyes as she proclaims, “I’m flying... Jack.” The phoenix has found her wings. Their hands touch and their eyes lock and their lips touch and passion erupts, for only in freedom can true love be found.

A moment on the touching of hands. I feel that the kiss is the ultimate expression of passion and love, with the touching of hands a close second. Now, don’t get me wrong, sex is an amazing and intimate thing, but in our society, in general, the genitals are something that is kept hidden and secret and are only in the last century beginning to gradually lose their taboo. On the other hand, our lips, our tongue, and our hands are used every day in order to explore our world and it is my contention that the touching of hands, lips and tongue show a far grander intent, for it is with the sense of touch that is found therein that we begin our attempt to explore the soul that lies within. I feel that I am under-explaining the magnitude that these things hold for me. The touching of fingers, holds within it the more sensory awareness than sex can ever hope of attaining in and of itself. When fingers touch and eyes lock, the soul becomes the third part of a shared trinity. A kiss will then increase this connection, this trinity, and sex will eventually allow it to transcend all physical boundaries. However, it begins with a touch and a look, for you see, without that sex is nothing but a base physical pleasure and will never attain the intimacy and the transcendent experience that it can be.

Rose drops the Heart of the Ocean diamond into the ocean and at that moment she returns her heart to her true love and she dies in her sleep that night. Then her soul journeys down to the wreck of the Titanic and it sours through the watery wreckage and the wreck transforms before our eyes into its former glory. Her soul floats to the main doors and a crewman is there with a smile to welcome her in and she floats into the room that holds the grand staircase and the souls move aside to give her passage and there he is, standing before her at the top of the stairs watching the clock, waiting for her, he senses her and turns around and he smiles at her as he holds out his hand and she takes it and they are reunited at last in an eternal kiss. I weep at this moment every time I see this film. I weep uncontrollably. I weep now as I write this. It is more than I can bear. My soul aches and I don’t know why. I have never known love like this and yet I weep for it to the point of breathlessness. I think that perhaps I weep like this because I have known this love, just not in this lifetime. I weep for my soulmate whom I miss terribly and I wish she would hurry up and find me because I ache for her.

Have you ever seen The Godfather: Part III? It’s by far the lesser of the trilogy, but there is a moment at the end when Michael has lost someone very dear to him and he lets out a sob so deep that it emits no sound. The pain is too deep to allow him the breath for sound and then he sucks in air like a drowning man and is finally able to let that pain escape vocally. Have you ever experienced that? A pain that is so deep that it can only be expressed in a silent scream? This is how I feel every time I see that final scene in Titanic. I have, for a long time, assumed this was due to unresolved grief from my Father’s death. However, tonight I remembered another time that I cried this deeply and it involved another film and I saw this film before my Father died. It was called “The Magic of Lassie.” I don’t know if you know about Lassie, but it’s a film and television series based on a Collie dog. Well, in this film, featured Jimmy Stewart, Lassie is taken away from her family and she undergoes a cross-country journey to get back them. Well, at the end of the film the family is sitting around the dinner table and the boy is saying a prayer in which he prays for Lassie’s safe return. Then, during this prayer, the boy begins to hear a dog barking and then, with the look of hope that only a child can have, he gets up from the table and goes to the door while the entire time the bark continues to get louder. The boy opens the door and he sees his dog standing on the top of a hill across the farm and they begin running toward each other as the music swells, reaching its crescendo as they embrace. Cheesy, I know, but when I was a kid this scene made me weep so uncontrollably that I felt embarrassed enough to hide my response from my family. It’s the act of reuniting that gets me, that sends me into uncontrollable sobbing even to this day.

It is the connection that was severed before this lifetime even began that makes me weep at these moments. One day I will meet the other half of me and I will weep at the sight of her because I will know her in a way that I have never known anyone in this lifetime and it is for her that I wait. I do not know how I will feel when I meet her. I only know that I have not felt it yet.

A photograph for you...

I just signed up for this over on Susannah's blog so now it is my joy to offer the same over here....

"The first five people to respond to this post (via the comments section) will get some form of art made by me. The only catch, of course: as with most memes, if you sign up, you have to put this in your own blog as well."

So, in honor of this wonderful woman who has been instrumental in fanning the flames of my desire to dip my toes into photography again, I propose the following: I will be going home next week for the Holidays and I will undertake a special photographic journey to San Francisco, my beloved City by the Bay that I miss so much, and will take a photograph specifically for each of the first five people who leave me an email to send it to. Don't forget, if you sign up you must repost this on your own blog and spread the love of art of love!

Weariness...

I'm feeling loneliness again like the weight of an empty universe. I've forgotten how it feels to wake up in the morning with joy in my heart. It's been a long time, such a long time. It will get better, but I am strongly beginning to doubt that it will get better here. I'm longing for something to look forward to, something to anticipate with joy, because right now all that I see ahead is a wasteland beyond a few self-created mirages and I am so weary.

His Dark Materials

One year from now the film adaption of The Goldan Compass will be hitting theatres. If they do this right it will be unforgettable. This series, for me, rivals the best in children's literature. The Chronicles of Narnia, A Wrinkle in Time, Peter Pan, Harry Potter... none of them can hold a candle to Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. If you haven't read it yet, you owe yourself the pleasure. The film website just launched and can be viewed here... www.goldencompassmovie.com

Love

I had a lucid dream last night. Lucid is not the perfect word. The word I am looking for would have the definition... a dream infused with sensory reality. It was one of those dreams that felt so real that I did not want to wake up from it. I do not remember a large portion of it and the portions that I do are choppy, but there is one moment that felt so real and magical that I know in my soul that it existed and that it was experienced by the soul that I shared it with. I've experienced this type of dream before and their rarity adds to their importance. So, here is my dream...

My memory fades in on my return to the world from Narnia. Now, this was not C.S. Lewis' Narnia, but that is what I chose to name it because this was a place that existed within the folds of our own world, just like Narnia. I remember that I had an adventure there, but I had left things unfinished and I knew that I must soon return. However, first I knew that I must go home and see my family and so I did. My home in the dream ended up being my grandparents' house, which no longer exists in the waking world.

The family congregated in the back yard under the Giant Oak Tree that had been cut down 27 years ago. God, I miss that Tree. In attendance were my Mother, my Grandfather, a woman I knew to be my Grandmother though I did not recognize her physical features, and my Father. I told my family about my adventure and I was sure that they wouldn't believe me because that's what always happens in the movies. Boy was I in for a shocker because they all already knew about Narnia. In fact, my Grandfather told me that my Father had become a Hero over there when he had accomplished some amazing feat that had been the salvation of the people there.

When my Grandfather told me this I looked over at my Father in awe. He was leaning against the Giant Oak Tree and his hair was shorter than I'd ever seen it in life and he was wearing the thick horn-rimmed glasses that he wore long before I knew him and he looked so young. I would swear that he looked 19 or 20. When I looked at him he looked down at the ground like he was a little embarrassed. Right then such pride and joy swelled up in me that my Dad had done these amazing things and somehow never managed to tell me about them and I knew this must have killed him because he would have relished the chance to tell me about his adventures. Perhaps he had been waiting for the right time that never came.

So, with joy in my heart I ran to him and wrapped my arms around him in a hug that attempted to push my soul into his because I was experiencing too much love for it not too. At first he tensed up, for he was never one for excessive emotional expression, then he relaxed into it and hugged me back with the same intensity of love that our souls merged together in harmony. It was one of the most wonderful moments in my life because in this dream I got to do and feel something that will never again be possible in this lifetime... I was able to hug my Dad and experience the love that I feel for him and that I know he must have felt for me. I did not want to let go and an eternity passed between us before the dream moved on.

I told them that I had to go back, that there was still work to do. My Grandmother brought out an old wooden box and a staff. She opened the box and told me that if I stepped into the box she could send me back to Narnia directly. I thanked her for the offer of help but politely declined, saying that I preferred to make the journey by foot to the place where I had crossed over before.

That is all that I remember of my dream. What I felt in that dream while hugging my Father was far too intense for it to have been anything but real. I believe that he, once again, came to me in that dream because what happened there I desperately needed to happen, just as his previous three appearances needed to happen. I wrote about one of them back in my May 1st post titled "A dream" and another in my May 30th post titled "Yet another dream..." and the third I have yet to right about because it happened several years before I started this blog. Anyway, ever since my Father's death I have always been very hesitant in demonstrating love to others because I am afraid to let it out and truly experience it in fear of that person leaving again, whether it be by choice or death. In my dream, however, I felt love so strong that I could not avoid expressing it and it is a lesson that I hope to carry over into my waking life. Time here is precious and it waits for no soul. I think that, perhaps, I should stop wasting it.

The Door in the Rose

The weight of roses. Red like the sun on a moonlit bay. Nothing. Blue divides life from love. Emptiness lingers like a lover's touch before the End of Days. The coals of diamond's flare, birth darkness like a knife in the night. Triumphant. Delay. Lost in a wilderness of sorrow and pain. Longing, urging, wrecking, breaking. The Angels of Light bear down upon the wings of waxed hilarity. Madness creeps like a breaking wave from beneath the shadows of memory long forgotten. There is time to believe. There is time to wait. No more. The pain of open heart bends my will to breaking. I will not stand to sit any longer. Life seeps in through the cracks of walls long ago built into forgotteness. Old layers of seepage washed away in a flood of light from beyond the years of the sightless sun. There is hope in the eyes of the Blue Moon. Rising from the depths of ages past the dawn of tomorrow. The tail is swallowed. The snake is reborn. Once again he strains to find his tail and renew the cycle. Circles within circles, circling around orbits of gravitating atoms hidden within the invisibility between this and that. Change is the inevitable certitude. Bend and flow or break and die. Strings pulling this and that from here to there; space, place, and time are one moment locked in momentum hurling through that which is larger than the cosmos. All existence of thought wrapped up in a quark, the key to a door that waits within the weight of a rose that sings the songs of better tomorrows.

Another picture and an impending change...

I am not one to deny the request of a beautiful woman, so here is the first picture of myself that I am putting on my blog, forever destroying the last vestige of my anonymity. Thank you, Susannah, for the request and the subtle nudge down the path.

It is funny, however, that the request comes just as I've decided for a change is in order, so don't get overly attached to the locks because they will be disappearing for a while. It has been said that a lot of emotional memory is stored in the hair. I read an interview with Lenny Kravitz in Rolling Stone a while back in which he related that when he cut off his dreadlocks, he experienced a spiritual rebirth, as if he freed himself of an unkown weight simply by cutting his hair. I would equate it to the equivalent of a reptile shedding it's skin as it grows. So, as I take another step along the path, I have been feeling the need for a fresh look and a new perspective. I tend to be a static person at times but then when I make a move it is generally a big one, such will be the case here and it's all going. Besides, one of the most wonderful things about hair is that it grows back. Namaste.
